A Skincare Conversation with Tata Harper & Dr. Stephen Dahmer

A Skincare Conversation with Tata Harper & Dr. Stephen Dahmer

While in search of a mindful and functional doctor about 15 years ago, Tata discovered Dr. Stephen Dahmer (aka Dr. D). After witnessing his expertise within the world of integrative and functional medicine, Tata quickly became a regular patient. Since launching Superkind, our skincare line made especially for reactive skin, Tata sat down with Dr. D to chat through all the causes of reactive skin and how great skin overall, takes more than just using great skincare. Through their conversation, we learned that there’s more to unpack on the topic of reactive skin and why it can be inherited and triggered by a number of factors.

And as the two discussed further, each shared a few of their favorite botanicals, daily habits, and more tips and tricks that not only support a balanced lifestyle, but healthy skin as well.

Chapter 1 |Modern Life

Whether we notice it or not, our everyday habits create a domino effect whenever our hormones and skin barrier are triggered. For example, stress can trigger your skin from within and cause reactions because of the imbalance of your hormones. On top of that, things like nutrition, allergies, pollution, and other irritants that your skin comes in contact with daily can also trigger inflammation, which is your body’s natural way of defending itself from damage. Once that inflammation is triggered, like a match to a flame - your skin reacts. So, applying the proper balanced of nourishment, like our Superkind essentials, is necessary to help your skin to reclaim a healthy balance.

Chapter 2 | The Gut & Skin Connection

With those with reactive skin, taking a closer look into your nutrition is a valid approach. And when taking a closer look at your diet, it’s important to note that allergies to food aren’t always the common trigger. They may be the last to trigger a reaction, however, the start of that reaction could very well begin with an unbalanced and unhealthy diet. And once your body has already taken on so much unhealthy food, it has no other option but to react as a cry for help. So, proper nutrition is key to avoid any possible reactions.

Chapter 3 |The Role of the Skin Microbiome

Just like our body’s immune system that defends our body from infection, our microbiome similarly protects our skin barrier. So whenever our skin becomes inflamed and irritated, our microbiome becomes unbalanced and not able to work properly and protect our skin. Then without that protection, our skin can be easily triggered and sensitive to allergens and other environmental stressors and irritants without the help of a balanced microbiome to maintain a strong skin barrier.

Chapter 4 | The Power of Plants

Plants have served as our primary source of medicine for centuries, so it’s only natural that healthy skin relies on their benefits. Like different nutrients that work harmoniously to create a healthy diet, combining the right natural botanicals can help create a healthy skin barrier. So just like a balanced diet, you can get a lot of skin-essential nutrients from natural plants, like those in our Farm Beauty and Counter Stress Complexes, to help feed your skin what it needs to look its healthiest.

Chapter 5 | Their Favorite New Botanicals

With so many powerful and efficacious botanicals surfacing in new and trending conversations, it can be hard to choose favorites. To help pinpoint those favorites, Dr. D shared that his new favorite category of botanicals has been adaptogens — botanicals known to promote balance and counteract stress and anxiety. He specifically calls out Rhodiola Rosea as a recent favorite.

Similar to botanicals that promote balance, Tata shares her recent favorite ingredients that make up our Extremophile Endurance Technology from our Superkind collection, which includes Microalgae Peptides, Rose of Jericho, and Mondo Root.

These ingredients have adapted in nature to withstand their own unique and extreme environments — making them the perfect botanicals to support easily triggered, sensitive skin.

Chapter 6 | Daily Healthy Habits

One daily, non-negotiable habit for Dr. D is Alkaline Breathing — a technique that “triggers energy in your body.” This specific exercise refers to inhaling for a significantly longer period of time than exhaling, which ultimately helps to calm the body. For Tata, a daily habit that helps to release energy during the day is dancing. Then when it’s time to wind down for bed, enjoying time in her personal infrared sauna helps to set the mood for sleep after a busy day. And finally, a sleep schedule that she sticks to every day helps give her body the proper time to rest. “By 9:30 pm I try to be in a mood for bed and I am typically in bed by 10 pm.”

As they discussed further, Dr. D shared, “the beauty of rituals is to reflect and see what other opportunities are there” - opportunities to ultimately support a healthy yet still fun-filled life.
