Behind-The-Bathroom with Lillian Garcia

Behind-The-Bathroom with Lillian Garcia

Next up in our Behind-The-Bathroom with Women We Love series, we decided to reach out to one of our favorite lifestyle trend-setters and entrepreneurs, Lillian Garcia, founder of the way u

Inspired by the talent and artisanship of the Wayuu tribe women, Lillian created her company to honor her Colombian heritage, which is a heritage that Tata shares and cherishes. Each one of Lillian’s colorful and beautifully crafted bags and clutches are handmade by the women of the Wayuu. Lillian works directly with these talented women, giving back to the community and assisting with personal and professional growth.

We are so inspired by Lillian’s story (and absolutely love her collection!) so we wanted to share with you a pair of Sun earrings by The Way U. Just in time for the 4th of July, use code: SUNBURST to light up your summer look with this pair of Sun earrings, plus our mini Illuminating duo - yours with any purchase over $200.

Q&A With Lillian Garcia:

Q: Why did you found 'the way u'? Could you tell us more about the products and artisans you work with?

A: I founded ‘the way u’ because I’ve always admired and loved the age-old traditions of the artisans in Colombia. They make the most beautiful products but live in remote areas where distribution and marketing can be a challenge in exporting their goods to other countries. I started ‘the way u’ as a way to help artisans in Colombia share their unique talents with the world.

At the moment we work with artisan groups along the coast of Colombia ranging from Barranquilla to La Guajira as well as artisans outside of Medellin and Bogota. Our mission is to collaborate with new artisan groups every year to offer a variety of assortment and discovery for our customer. We started with the traditional wayuu mochila bags but have since expanded to include hand-crafted straw bags, hand-made leather bags and jewelry.

Q: What is the one little thing that you do for yourself that makes you feel good everyday?

A: Working out. My workout routine consists of weight training, boxing, running and pilates. Just having the time to disconnect and challenge myself physically and mentally helps me to feel strong and motivated.

Q: What is a key part of your daily wellness ritual (either morning or night)?

A: Starting my morning off with warm lemon water and then celery juice.  Taking the time in the morning to start slow and do something to help jump-start your body and metabolism really helps start the day in the right direction.

Q: How do you keep up with your routine while traveling? How does it change/ stay the same?

A: My routine varies during travel. I like to take the time to allow space to disconnect-reconnect. I may not work out everyday but I make sure to stay active. Also isn’t easy to find celery juice everywhere but I try and supplement with a green juice or detox juice.

Q: How much time do you spend in the bathroom getting ready in the morning? How much time at night?

A: I like to be in and out. So I would say around 10min in the morning and at night, maybe longer on the days that I do a face mask.

Q: Would you say you are a beauty minimalist or a beauty maximalist?

A: I think I’m a minimalist- my husband may say otherwise! Right now I feel like I’m in a really good place with my skincare routine and daily beauty routine which all feel easy, light and effortless for summer- so I’m sticking to that. Tata's Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer and Hydrating Floral Essence are so perfect for this light summer feel!

Q: Are you for nip & tuck or against it?

A: I’m for whatever makes you feel good, confident and beautiful. I personally haven’t done anything yet, just trying to fight my aging concerns the natural way for now.

Q: What’s your most important beauty secret and who did you learn it from?

A: Use a deep pore cleansing mask 3x a week. For this, I love the Clarifying Mask for that squeeky clean feeling! And make sure you adjust your skincare routine from summer to winter as your skin has different needs during different seasons. I learned all of this from my dermatologist.

Q: What on-the-go products do you always have in your purse? When you travel?

A: In my bag I always carry a hydrating vitamin-e lip gloss and a hydrating essence to refresh and moisturize on the go. On the plane I have a whole routine that involves moisturizing every 3hrs with moisturizer and essence and then a hydrating facemask, such as Tata's Floral Mask, before I sleep if it’s an overnight flight.

Q: Where’s the place you feel most relaxed?

A: I feel most relaxed, happy and at peace in Cartagena, Colombia. We go about 2-3x a year. We get to spend time with family and friends and build new memories. My husband and I also got married there so it still makes my heart swoon. It’s our magical happy place.

Q: Who do you share your skincare products with?

A: Whenever I find a good new product I always encourage my husband to try it too. Sometimes he gives it a try! Also always sharing good products with my sister-in-law and friends!
