We’re catching up with Deddeh Howard, lifestyle blogger, creator of the Black Mirror project, and one of our favorite beauty inspirations, as she gives us an inside peek into her summer at home. 

One look at Deddeh’s Instagram page and you can tell that she prioritizes her health and wellness. Deddeh was born and raised in West Africa, and currently lives in Los Angeles. While finishing her bachelors in Health Sciences, along with running a stunning fashion blog, Deddeh gracefully balances a beautiful life with a busy schedule — one of her secrets?  Our new Clear Skin Kit is key for beating breakouts and keeping skin healthy. Read on for our chat with Delfina and the inside scoop on her summer skincare essentials.

Q: First, tell us a bit about yourself and your work? 

I’m Deddeh Howard, I was born in Liberia and raised on the west side of Africa. I moved to the states when I was about 17 years old and currently live in beautiful Los Angeles. My friends call me the health girl because I love everything about health and fitness. I try to live a healthy lifestyle by eating clean, exercising 6 times a week, meditating, and living in the moment. I’m very conscious of our environment and what I put on and in my body. Because this lifestyle brings so much joy and peace to my life, I started my blog (Secretofdd) and my Instagram page to share and help women live a more meaningful, healthy and peaceful life.

Q: What's work like for you now? 

It’s a bit interesting and intense haha because I was used to being on the go all the time, traveling and working outdoors, but with all the changes lately, it was hard at first to get used to this new normal.

Balancing working and living from home wasn’t easy but I think I got it a bit under control. These past months really taught me that it's all about balance and putting your health first.

I honestly love what I do so I’m just balancing working at home and living at home as well, and it’s not so bad.

Q: What is a key part of your daily wellness routine? 

The key part is my meditation practice. I used to do this every morning but I currently meditate twice a day (mornings and evenings) and it is really helping me stay calm, and do my best each and every day.

Q: What does your morning skincare routine look like? 

Oh, it's a long one. I am up at 5 or 6AM almost every day of the week. I go for a long run since the gyms are still closed, or sometimes I do my at home HIIT and walk my dog. Not only does it feel so good to get up and get moving, but staying active is also so important in keeping my skin healthy & glowing. 

After working out, I love my morning beauty routine. This is how I show love to my skin, so I will get that out of the way in the beginning of my day.

Step 1: Cleanse

I always start my skincare ritual with a deep cleanse. This summer my go-to has been the Clarifying Cleanser.

I love the cooling and foaming sensation of this cleanser, it feels and smells like a spa — especially with the mint extract. It also works wonders in treating (and preventing) blemishes without over-drying or stripping my skin. 

I love using it after my morning workouts to sweep away any dirty or sweat. It's the perfect way to kickstart my day with a clean slate and a clear, comfortable complexion. 

Step 2: Mask 

Right now, in the heat of summer,  I feel like my skin is more prone to being oily — in part from the humidity, and in part to the excessive touching and use of masks. Step 3: Hydrate

Step 4: Treat

I like to apply this treatment at night and I swear by morning my pimples are calmed down...without that irritating dryness from so many other pimple creams. 

Q: Would you say you are a beauty minimalist or maximalist? 

Honestly, I’m a maximalist because I love all things skincare and it’s really hard to be a minimalist here. I have tried it but it didn’t work.I am very careful and picky about what goes on my skin because I have the most sensitive skin though.

Q: What is one thing that you do for yourself that makes you feel good every day?

Giving myself the time to be fully present and live in the moment. It sounds easy but when you learn how to put all your techs away and be fully with yourself or with friends & family in the moment, it’s just a beautiful feeling and it makes me feel happy and calm.

Q: Anything else you’d like to share?

I want to share more on being healthy and having a meaningful lifestyle. Giving myself the time to be fully present and living in the moment has really changed my life and the way I see the world for the better. It has helped me judge myself less and try my best each and every day because honestly it’s the best we can do; “to do our best”. So I just want to encourage everyone to try this. Try to put your phone away for an hour or so and just be with yourself and live in the moment. It’s truly amazing.
