Fade Sun Spots, Naturally
We’ve all been there. You spent a few too many hours laying out in the sun (despite slathering on high amounts of SPF), and now have a few new spots on your face to show for it. While those little freckles were once adorable, you’re now a little less excited about the idea of skin discoloration and dark spots.
So, what can we do? While these spots can be especially frustrating to deal with - and even seem to last months at end - there is hope! Fading sun spots and hyperpigmentation is possible with a little patience and a few targeted products.
And we’ll let you in on a secret: it’s not as hard as you may think.
Read on for our step-by-step guide on how to handle these pesky sun spots, from prevention to treatment, and brighten your overall complexion:
Step 1: Identify The Problem
Let’s start with the good news: most sunspots are harmless and can be effectively treated. They are also super common, and become more common as we age (sorry, buzzkill).
Often, a doctor or dermatologist can tell the difference between a sun spot or something more serious just by looking at it - so definitely be sure to monitor your spots for any irregularities. Any spots on your skin that are dark or change in appearance should be evaluated by your doctor.
Otherwise, sun spots are really just due to an overproduction of pigment after sun exposure. The pigment in these sun spots (melanin) moves deeper into the skin over time...so it’s important to be speedy and start your treatment as soon as you notice a new spot!
Step 2: Targeted Treatments
Concentrated Brightening Essence + Concentrated Brightening Serum:
This powerhouse brightening duo is your secret weapon for fading any type of hyperpigmentation - from sun spots to acne scars. Use Concentrated Brightening Essence before using Concentrated Brightening Serum to target and kick those dark spots to the curb.
This blend of targeted technology takes a triple-action approach to fighting each stage of the hyperpigmentation process, by helping to inhibit the passage of melanin to the surface, while boosting the skin’s natural ability to minimize discoloration and brighten the overall complexion. Key natural ingredients include:
- Madonna Lilly Stem Cells to increase cell renewal by shedding hyper-pigmented cells and decreasing the pigment in dark spots.
- Sea Fern & Norwegian Sea Kelp to decrease the skin’s pigment, as well as pigment production, to provide overall brightening and tone-correction.
Retinoic Nutrient Face Oil
Both Vitamin C and Vitamin A (Retinol) work wonders when it comes to calming, soothing, and repairing damaged skin. Luckily, our multi-tasking Retinoic Nutrient Face Oil is powered with natural sources of both - at high concentrations for maximum results. This formula provides complete skin nourishment for healthy, radiant looking skin. Key natural ingredients include:
Apricot Seed Oil (a natural source of Vitamin C) to brighten overall complexion, as well as contains high levels of Lycopene which works to lighten dark spots.
Rosehip Seed Oil (a natural Retinol) to help increase cell renewal and push out cells with discolored pigments. This is also one of the most powerful sources to reduce any visible signs of aging.
When dealing with hyperpigmentation, it’s important to exfoliate your skin at least 1-2 times per week with a gentle exfoliant. This is crucial, because it accelerates the process of skin shedding and regrowth, which of course means fresh skin that's not discolored is brought to the surface quicker. OurRegenerating Cleanser will transform your skin with both physical and enzymatic cleansing.
Key natural ingredients include:
Pomegranate Enzymes to provide physical exfoliation, which increases cell renewal to shed hyper-pigmented cells and fade spots.
White Willow Bark (a natural BHA and source of salicylic acid) to help refine pores and clear buildup for overall healthier, glowing skin.
Step 3: A Few Lifestyle Tips
Wear Clean SPF
Every. Single. Day. Even if it seems cloudy out! Not only are you protecting your skin, but you will also be helping fade & prevent future sun spots. UV exposure makes any skin discoloration darker - so if you're not wearing sunscreen, your spots aren't going anywhere. You could be using all the best brightening products on the market, but your spots will still be there. We are currently loving Soléo Organics sunscreen for all-natural protection.
Be Sun Smart In General
While the sun shouldn't be seen as the enemy, its certainly important to be mindful of its clear dangers. A few other ways to be sun-savvy this summer include avoiding the sun between 10AM and 3PM (when the rays are strongest and most likely to cause skin damage) and eating a sun-protective diet. Read our full post here on the best ways to be smart in the sun this summer.
And Of Course, Treat Skin With Extra TLC
In addition to slathering on SPF, certain products can be used to enhance your skin's sun defense. Our summer must-haves include Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer for light-weight hydration, Hydrating Floral Essence for a cooling mist of moisture after a long day at the beach, and Hydrating Floral Mask to comfort and nourish skin thats had a little too much sun.
