mastering the art of happy traveling
I spend a lot of time on the road, traveling from my home in Vermont to stores, events, Masterclasses and spas everywhere from Texas to Miami to California. I travel so much that Ive really honed my technique, so that I feel as comfortable and at-home on the road as possible. Theres nothing more unfortunate than arriving in a new city with a day full of events, meetings and obligations when youre feeling dehydrated or wiped out, and your day hasnt even begun!
These traveling tips can help during this holiday season, too, when youre hopping on planes to visit loved ones far away. My philosophy when it comes to travel is to really try to enjoy the process, and to make it easy for yourself. So, here are my top six tips for happy traveling, for holidays or for any occasion!
1: I have gotten in the habit of traveling with exercise clothes on – leggings, sneakers, a soft t-shirt and a knit sweater (since its always so freezing on planes). Sometimes I see ladies running around the airport in high heels and tight skirts and I think, why do that to yourself? For me, being comfortable is such a necessity.
2: Pack a big shawl that you can use as a scarf, a blanket, a pillow on the plane – I think youll find that its versatility is really key. I have a big blue wool tartan shawl from Scotland that I have with me everywhere. Its warm enough to practically serve as a winter jacket, but soft enough to cozy up with on a plane or train (similar one here).
3: Make sure you charge your phones and tablets ahead of time, and stock them with your favorite shows, episodes, or podcasts, so youre not disappointed mid-flight when you realize you forgot to load your favorite show. Traveling is sometimes the only quiet time I have to catch up on my shows and movies, so I always make sure to remember this. My current favorite show: Boardwalk Empire!
4: Aromatherapy! The day I discovered aromatherapy, my life changed for the better. I have my three little treatments everywhere, but the one I recommend for traveling is the Irritability Treatment. It instantly puts you in a good mood. It has essential oils that lift the spirit out of a slump, and even just taking the ten seconds or so to apply it to your pulse points and breathe it in is an important moment to reconnect with your mood – ask yourself, why am I frazzled? Lets calm down here. Its really a life-saver.
5: I always recommend keeping some travel-friendly skincare products handy, so that when you arrive at your destination, you look radiant. I carry my Hydrating Floral Essence with me at all times, to replenish moisture on-the-go, and my Be Adored for some moisture and color for my lips. Its too big for a carry-on, but I also think our Moisturizing Mask is an essential product to put in your check-through bag; its such a powerful moisture treatment, which is exactly what compromised, confused skin needs when youre between time zones and climates.
6: Keep your favorite snacks handy! You never know whats going to be open when you get to where youre going. My favorite snacks to travel with are bags of dried fruit (like mangoes and apricots), dried plantain chips, and Kind nut bars.
