Tata Talks: Our Top Tips to Combat Pollution
As summer winds down, and we move back to the city for jobs or school, it’s important to remember to give our skin a little extra love. Returning to the daily grind of a city comes with an increase of air pollutants that can be harmful to our skin.
Let’s break it down. Here’s how air pollution hurts your skin:
- Air pollutants come from everything from smog, cigarette smoke, industrial gases and car exhaust, all of which release harmful chemicals into the environment and into the skin.
- Free radical damage and chronic inflammation from these pollutants lead to a break down of collagen fibers, resulting in premature aging and hyperpigmentation.
- Pollutants also strip the skin of essential vitamins, leading to dullness or congestion.
So if pollution is the silent enemy, then clean air is essential for dewy, fresh skin. And we’re lucky. Burlington, VT is consistently ranked among the top cleanest cities in America. But we know not everyone has that luxury. Here are our top tips to keep your skin pure + pristine in the city:
OUR SKIN SAVIORS:
Consider this your daily detox treatment. Packed with powerful ingredients such as purple clay complex, our Purifying Cleanser creates an enzymatic anti-pollution effect to help cleanse your skin of impurities. Use once or twice a day, but especially at night to wash away any buildup or environmental stressors from the day.
We like to call this our re-set button to bring skin back to a state of balance. Whether you like to mask on Sundays, or as part of your Thursday night routine to get ready for the weekend, our Purifying Mask is your one stop shop to purge your pores and renew a sqeaky clean complexion. An essential for anyone who lives in the city or has oily, blemish prone skin.
TATA'S TIPS TO AVOID POLLUTION:
Improve The Air Quality Inside Your Home
Whether you are in the city or in the countryside, your indoor air quality can also have a huge impact on skin health. Make your home a sacred place by purifying the air and eliminating pollutants such as dust molecules and synthetic fragrances.
We're currently loving Molekule’s PECO air purifier. With innovative technology, this purifier works at the molecular level to eliminate indoor air pollution and free radicals. It’s, quite literally, the path to pure air we’ve been missing!
If Molekule isn’t on your agenda, some of our other quick tips to purify your indoor air include Salt Lamps to detox your home, as well as switching to 100% natural candles and cleaning supplies. Don’t forget to also open your windows and allow fresh air to cycle in!
Purify with Plants
Country: Don’t forget about a beauty booster that’s available to you at no cost: spending time outdoors! Rather than going to the gym, take your runs outside where nature blooms with air-purifying green plants and trees.
City: Although a city park still counts as spending time outside, we recommend boosting your daily dose of green by bringing in a few house plants. English Ivy and Areca Palm are two of our favorite (very low maintenance!) plants that have an amazing ability to clean the air around you.
Pick your own Beauty Foods
Country: We challenge you to source and locate your nearest organic farm. That way, you’ll always be in the know on where to find the freshest produce, with the smallest environmental footprint. Our favorite? Shelburne Orchards. This is our go-to for apple picking. It’s not only a great way to spend a fall day outside in the fresh air, but apples are also filled with antioxidant phytochemicals that support gorgeous skin.
City: If you don’t have easy access to a local farm, take this day to get a DIY project underway. Potted plants are an easy and chic way to have your own little city garden. Even a kitchen windowsill or apartment balcony does the trick! We are loving Urban Agriculture's Herb Kit to plant our own potted herbs such as parsely or thyme.
