So, What Exactly Is CBD?

So, What Exactly Is CBD?

It's the most buzzed about ingredient on the market - but also the most mysterious. From topicals to supplements, makeup, and everything in between, you’ve probably noticed CBD popping up everywhere these days with powerful claims to calm skin and reduce inflammation.

We often get asked what our opinion is on the consumer-labeled "hero ingredient" and if we'd ever consider creating a product of our own. Here at Tata Harper, we find that doing proper research is the most important step in educating ourselves not only as a leading green beauty brand, but as consumers ourselves.

So, what even is CBD, and where does it come from?!

CBD (also known as Cannabidiol) is a natural compound found in cannabis. Cannabis contains 113 different cannabinoids; the most notable ones are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD. THC and CBD share a nearly exact formula, but one critical difference in their molecular structure gives each compound their own unique medicinal properties.

Unlike THC, CBD isn’t psychoactive and won’t make you high. Instead, CBD not only combats the psychoactive effects of THC, but studies have shown it can relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and beyond!" - our friends at Plant People

You may be wondering, "well then what is the difference between marijuana and hemp?"

Hemp contains very little, and often times, barely any THC. The boom of hemp products being sold throughout the market is able to happen legally in the U.S. because unlike marijuana, hemp is formulated to have a higher dosage of CBD instead of THC.

To fully understand the benefits of CBD, you need to be aware of how cannabinoids interact with the human body. Two kinds of cell receptors in our bodies, called CB1 and CB2, comprise the Endocannabinoid system. These cell receptors are found throughout important systems like the digestive tract, central nervous system, cardiovascular system and immune system, and are only activated by cannabinoids. Studies have shown that the human body naturally produces cannabinoids, called Endocannabinoids that interact with the CB1 and CB2 cell receptors in our bodies to better regulate basic functions like mood, appetite, pain and sleep. This is why CBD works so well in the human body!

When Tata Harper Met Plant People

As the brand name suggests, Plant People advocates for all plants, not just one compound within the cannabis plant. More than just a brand, it represents a philosophy around the transformative power of plant-based living.

The founders, Gabe Kennedy & Hudson Gaines-Ross, have a similar backstory to Tata as well. Like Tata, who was turned away from conventional, synthetic skincare products after her stepfather’s cancer diagnosis, both Gabe and Hudson represent a shift away from conventional western medicine that sometimes may be more harmful than good.

Whether rooted in medicine or skincare, each story ends the same: with healing and wholeness found within the power of plants and a desire to share this lifestyle with others.

The Takeaway:

In typical Tata Harper fashion, we love finding like-minded brands that take our mission to the next level. When looking for a CBD partner, we went straight to the gold standard. Plant People scours the globe to source the purest and most effective ingredients. Their complex, innovative formulas feature upwards of 4+ herbs and plant extracts in each product to deliver specific benefits. With an aligned commitment to sustainability practices, there couldn’t have been a more perfect fit for this partnership.
