why face oils in summer are a good idea
Using a face oil in the summertime may feel a bit like an oxymoron has made its way into your beauty routine – but we’re here to tell you that you should keep that skincare step through the hot months, no matter how humid and sweaty you get between morning and night.
Here at Tata Harper, we’re firm believers that the more moisture, the better, for a few basic reasons: skin that’s sufficiently moisturized is less prone to developing wrinkles and fine lines, and, skin that has healthy hydration has an actual glow. It’s no secret that everyone wants effervescent skin during the summertime; well, keeping face oils on your shelf through the summer will help you get there.
Most of us want to skimp on oil as soon as the temperatures climb into the upper 70’s because our skin naturally starts to sweat, and we’re more likely to look shiny mid-way through the day. But it’s important to know that sweat and the oil that our skin naturally produces, sebum, are two different substances that come from two different places. Sweat comes from our sweat glands; sebum comes from our sebacious glands, and which is (obviously) oilier and waxier than sweat, which is mostly water and dissolved salts.
It’s true that warmer weather prompts heavier sebum production from those sebacious glands (which are highly concentrated in the T-zone), but using a face oil in the morning is a good strategy to reduce excess sebum production through the day; the skin recognizes that it’s hydrated and sufficiently lubricated, and reduces its oil output.
Face oils can act as carriers for your other treatment products, helping ingredients to effectively hydrate and treat skin. One of the best ways to do this is to mix a bit of face oil with your daily serum, just after cleansing – then, massage into the skin and neck, and that’s that. We’d recommend our Beautifying Face Oil; its lightweight and silky formula blends beautifully with serums and it delivers long-lasting moisture.
Botanical oils are usually highly concentrated with antioxidants, which you can’t get too much of in the summer – our skin gets barraged with free radicals through the day as we’re exposed to sunshine and air pollution; antioxidants can help prevent and reverse free radical damage. In our Retinoic Nutrient Face Oil, Alfalfa, Arnica and Jojoba oils all provide nourishment to keep the skin healthy.
Last, face oils are biocompatible in the sense that they’re made of similar stuff as our skin’s own sebum layer and moisture barrier; because they can reinforce that protective mantle, they can help keep bad stuff out (free radicals, pollutant particles) and good stuff in (moisture), while also helping to keep the skin balanced during extreme temperatures, fluctuating humidity temperatures, travel, etc.
So, what do you think? Ready to give face oils another try this summer?
